saints and blessed from consecrated communities of men
The most recent update to the attached lists below was made on June 6, 2016. There are 3,402 names included on the Master List file below representing 91 distinct communities of men religious. Of the list, 1,210 have been canonized and another 2,192 have been beatified. The primary change to all the applicable files is the recent canonization of Fr. Stanislaus Papczynski, founder of the Marians of the Immaculate Conception, the first Polish male religious order. (St. Stanislaus was previously a member of the Piarists before founding the new community.) Earlier changes in this material on religious saints and blessed included two Conventual Franciscans from Poland who were beatified on December 5, 2015 and twenty-six Capuchin friars who were beatified by Pope Francis on November 21, 2015. The Capuchins are listed as "Martyrs of Barcelona" in the reports below since all were killed in odium fidei from 1936 to 1937 during the religious persecution in the Spanish Civil War.

Saints are always the glory and the inspiration of the Christian community of faith. What a testimony to faith in Jesus that so many religious men have lived boldly and courageously among our religious institutes. So as the Church celebrates the Year for Consecrated Life, the National Office of CMSM has undertaken a project to document the names of many saints and blesseds who were members of consecrated communities of men.
Though extensive published and electronic sources have been consulted, it is nearly impossible to find details on every person who has been canonized or beatified. However, an attempt to include given and/or religious names, their respective communities, and their feast days, has been done. Updates to these lists will continue as additional sources of information are identified and made available.

The result of this analysis may be accessed via files available on this website in list form sorted by the saints’ and blesseds’ customary feast days as well as by their communities’ names. Where multiple sources report different feast days, we have used the one identified by the specific community the person belonged to as verified by their website and/or respective published Ordo. Also, if feast days could not be determined, the date of death of the saint/blessed is given as the feast day.
Over 90 communities are represented in the master list of saints and blesseds from religious communities of men. Of the 3,400 individual names, some are well known but others are “relatively obscure” -- martyrs from the Spanish Civil War, the French Revolution, etc. Wherever names were identified that could be tied to specific hagiographic data, they are included. Lay or tertiary members are not part of this analysis nor are the women who are associated with and celebrated by their counterparts in men’s communities (e.g. Saints Clare of Assisi, Scholastica, Teresa of Jesus, Monica).
We welcome feedback and any corrections or additions. Please direct your input to mnovelly@cmsm.org so that updates may be made. A master alphabetical list by name of the canonized or beatified religious (which may be sorted by the various fields of information) may also be requested through CMSM.
Many saints and blesseds have gone before us “marked with the sign of faith.” They have died in the Lord; they have died for the Lord, and they have inspired many to follow in their footsteps. Let us humbly ask for their intercession and prayers for all those in consecrated life -- past, present and future.

A great many men from the Benedictine and Franciscan families have been beatified or canonized over the years. Below are two files which are a subset of the above reports for these two large extended communities of men. The Franciscan Family list now includes SAINT Junípero Serra, OFM, canonized on September 23, 2015. If other communities would like a similar list of their canonized or beatified members, please contact Martha Novelly (mnovelly@cmsm.org).

Many sources have been used to create the master list of men from religious communities who were canonized or beatified. In addition to various communities' specific websites too numerous to mention, the list below lists the primary sources which yielded the greatest number of names. A very special thank you to Msgr. Ansgar Laczko of the Archdiocese of Washington for his tireless efforts to sort through the hundreds of names and feast days of Benedictines and Monastics who have been canonized or beatified over the years.
