institutes of consecrated life

Each community of consecrated men is known as an "institute." Often, however, communities will be alternately be referred to as an "order," society," or a "congregation." See out list of men's institutes to get an idea of how much diversity there is among consecrated institutes.

Men's religious communities vary in the composition of their membership. In some institutes all members are lay religious brothers and there are no priests. In other communities, all members are priests, deacons, or seminarians. And in many "mixed" communities lay religious brothers live and minister alongside their priest, seminarian, and deacon confreres.
